Kelley Patriat was interested in the field of international education, so she enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Professional French Master’s Program.

“The field is relatively young, but given that it is professionalizing so quickly, the demands on new professionals are growing more strict,” Patriat says. “The Professional French Master’s Program gave me the legitimacy I needed to get a job as an international student adviser.”

UW-Madison’s Master of Professional French is geared toward students who want to use their advanced French in professional settings in the U.S. and abroad, whether in business, education, international development, or cultural affairs. The program is offered in a full-time academic track, which students can complete in a year, or in a three-year summer institute track designed for teachers and working professionals.

Depending on their area of interest, students take courses across the UW-Madison campus, from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication to the Department of Political Science. The program also connects students with a French-speaking internship in a business or organization directly related to their career goals.

“The program really allowed me to get into the part of the international education field I wanted to work in,” says Patriat. “This was all thanks to my internship, the networking, and the professional experience I was able to have.”
