Building Enclosure Commissioning

Become a subject matter expert on a commissioning team or lead a team in a building construction project that requires enclosure commissioning by completing the Building Enclosure Commissioning Certificate from UW–Madison.

Is this program right for you?

The building enclosure is often the most expensive part of a new building, as well as the most difficult and costly to correct after construction. You can make an impact on your commissioning team with a Building Enclosure Commissioning Certificate from UW–Madison College of Engineering’s Office of Interdisciplinary Professional Programs.

Whether you specialize in building enclosures and building science or lead a commissioning team with building enclosure responsibilities, a certificate can improve your qualifications and ability to submit bids. All certificate earners take a three-day course and sit for an examination. Because the course and exam can be completed in just a few days, it’s a convenient option for working professionals.

You will have the opportunity to earn up to two certificates, depending on your specific interests and score on the final exam. The first certificate option is the Accredited Building Enclosure Commissioning Process Provider (BECxP), which recognizes a technical expert in building enclosures and building science. The second certificate option is the Accredited Commissioning Authority + Building Enclosure (CxA+BE), which recognizes a leader of a Commissioning Process team with sufficient building enclosure knowledge to manage a project that includes enclosures. Both certifications are valid for five years.

Certificate earners typically include all types of commissioning and building enclosure professionals, as well as architects, engineers, operations and maintenance personnel, developers, and contractors.

As part of each certificate, you learn the key building enclosure requirements, fundamentals of building science, and typical challenges not only from expert instructors, but also from your peers in the course. The building enclosure commissioning process is based on National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) guidelines.

With the Building Enclosure Commissioning Certificates, you gain key knowledge and distinguish yourself in the commissioning industry.
